Title the unit in your business name, secure commercial auto liability (and any state or federal filings), and pay HVUT Form 2290 if the taxable weight is 55,000 lb+. If you’ll run interstate, apply for IRP apportioned registration through your base state’s motor carrier/IRP office—submit the cab card application with VIN, unladen/gross weight, actual or estimated miles by jurisdiction, proof of insurance, proof of place of business, and taxes/fees. If you operate intrastate only, register for in-state plates instead. While plates are processing, you may need temporary trip/fuel permits to operate legally.
The International Registration Plan (IRP) is a registration agreement among U.S. states and Canadian provinces that lets an interstate carrier use one “apportioned” plate and cab card to travel in all member jurisdictions. You pay registration fees proportionally to where you run based on reported miles. IRP is registration only; it doesn’t replace IFTA (fuel tax), oversize/overweight permits, or insurance/filings required for operating authority.
